7-Zip Maximum Compression: Best Settings for Smallest File Size

When every megabyte counts—whether you are backing up massive archives, archiving project files, or squeezing data down to fit an attachment limit—7-Zip stands as a titan in the file compression world. Out of the box, its proprietary .7z format outperforms traditional formats like .zip or .rar.

However, standard settings only scratch the surface. Turning on 7-Zip Maximum (Ultra) Compression unlocks the full mathematical potential of its underlying algorithms, shrinking files down to absolute minimum footprints.

1. The Standard Recipe: Setting Up “Ultra” Mode

To push 7-Zip to its limits using the graphical user interface, you need to configure specific parameters rather than just accepting defaults:

  1. Right-click your target file or folder, choose 7-Zip, and click Add to archive…
  2. Set the Archive format to 7z (this is mandatory; the standard .zip format does not support these advanced parameters).
  3. Change the Compression level to Ultra.
  4. Set the Compression method to LZMA2 (or LZMA).

2. Tuning the Engine: Advanced Parameters for Absolute Minimum Size

Selecting “Ultra” gives you a great head start, but true optimization requires tweaking the advanced fields hidden beneath the surface.

Dictionary Size

The dictionary size tells the algorithm how much history to look back on to find repeating patterns.

  • How it works: A larger dictionary size means 7-Zip can find matches across much larger distances within your files.
  • The Setting: Push this as high as your system RAM allows (
