When Runway released Gen-1 in early 2023, it marked a massive turning point in generative artificial intelligence. While the world was marveling at AI’s ability to generate static images and text, Gen-1 proved that AI could fundamentally reshape moving pictures.
What Was Runway Gen-1?
Unlike later models that could generate entirely new videos purely from text prompts from scratch, Gen-1 specialized in video-to-video synthesis. It took an existing video clip—whether shot on a smartphone or a professional camera—and transformed its visual style, texture, and aesthetic based on a text prompt or a reference image, all while preserving the original structure, movement, and composition of the subjects.
Core Capabilities and Modes
Gen-1 introduced several intuitive ways to direct video transformation:
- Stylization: Applying artistic textures, paintings, or material styles (like claymation, watercolor, or sci-fi metallic shaders) to everyday footage.
- Storyboard to Render: Turning a rough 3D render or blockout animation into a fully textured, high-fidelity scene using text descriptions.
- Customization via Images: Using a reference photograph to dictate the color palette, lighting, and mood of the output video.
Why Gen-1 Mattered for Creators
Before Gen-1, achieving these types of transformations required complex CGI pipelines, frame-by-frame rotoscoping, or heavy visual effects software. Gen-1 democratized advanced style-transfer for filmmakers, digital artists, and hobbyists, drastically cutting down the time and technical expertise required to prototype cinematic concepts.
Although subsequent generations (like Gen-2 and Gen-3) expanded capabilities into full text-to-video generation, Gen-1 established the foundational framework for how AI models process temporal consistency across video frames without losing track of object motion.
