Surviving the Slash: Mastering “Withstand Combo” in Kingdom Hearts III

If you have ever stared in horror as a late-game boss in Kingdom Hearts III unleashed a blinding, multi-hit blender of pain that somehow left Sora clinging to life with a single hit point, you have Withstand Combo to thank.

Whether you are stepping into the series for the first time or returning to tackle the brutal punishment of a Level 1 Critical run, understanding this passive support ability is the ultimate line between sweet victory and a frustrating “Game Over” screen.

What Is Withstand Combo?

Historically known as “Once More” in past titles like Kingdom Hearts II and Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts III rebranded the mechanic to Withstand Combo. Costing a modest 4 AP to equip, its official in-game description is straightforward:

Always retain at least 1 HP if you are hit while you have 2 HP or more. You will remain protected throughout the enemy’s multi-hit combo.

In practice, the ability acts as an invisible safety net. If an enemy catches Sora in a rapid-fire flurry of blows, Withstand Combo prevents successive hits from reducing your health to zero. Instead, your health locks squarely at 1 HP for the duration of that specific attack string, buying you a precious window to turn the tide.

The Dynamic Duo: Withstand Combo vs. Second Chance

Players often confuse Withstand Combo with its sibling ability, Second Chance. While they look similar on paper, they target two entirely different types of danger:

| Ability | What It Does | When It Triggers |
| :— | :— | :— |
| Second Chance | Protects you from a single, massive, standalone hit that would otherwise wipe out your entire health bar from full. | When a single heavy strike deals more damage than your current maximum HP. |
| Withstand Combo | Protects you from a rapid-succession barrage of smaller hits mid-combo, locking you safely at 1 HP. | When caught in a multi-hit attack chain after starting with 2 HP or more. |
