Decoding the Deep: How Dr. Aijun Song Is Revolutionizing Underwater Communications
While humanity has mapped the surfaces of distant planets and spun an invisible web of radio frequencies across the continents, Earth’s oceans remain a notoriously difficult frontier. Radio waves, the lifeblood of modern wireless communication, slam into an invisible brick wall underwater, attenuating rapidly within meters.
Enter Dr. Aijun Song, an innovator in electrical and computer engineering whose pioneering research is rewriting how we connect with, monitor, and understand aquatic environments.
Bridging the Terrestrial-Aquatic Divide
Dr. Song’s academic journey laid a rigorous foundation for tackling complex, multi-variable engineering challenges. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Xidian University in China before completing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Delaware. Following extensive postdoctoral and research faculty roles, he joined the faculty at The University of Alabama, where he serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a key contributor to the Center for Water Quality Research and the Alabama Water Institute.
