Beyond “Gangnam Style”: What is PSY Up To and Does He Still Make Music?
It has been over a decade since the infectious horse-riding dance of “Gangnam Style” took over the world, shattering internet records and making K-pop a household phrase globally. For many casual listeners, PSY remains a legendary one-hit wonder of the early 2010s viral era.
However, looking at PSY solely through the lens of his 2012 mega-hit misses a massive, ongoing career. So, does PSY still make music? The short answer is yes, though his role in the music industry has evolved significantly.
The Evolution: From Global Phenomenon to Label Mogul
While PSY (Park Jae-sang) still records and releases music, his day-to-path has expanded. In 2019, he founded his own entertainment company, P Nation.
Stepping away from his longtime home YG Entertainment, PSY built P Nation with a mission to foster artists with the same uninhibited, energetic spirit that defined his own career. Over the years, the label has housed and produced music for major K-pop and R&B heavyweights, including:
- Crush
- Hwasa (of MAMAMOO)
- Heize
- TNX (The New Six)
As the head honcho of P Nation, much of PSY’s creative energy goes into producing, mentoring, and shaping the careers of other musicians. But that doesn’t mean he has hung up his own microphone.
Recent Releases: Proving He Still Has It
PSY hasn’t faded quietly into the background. In April 2022, he released his ninth full-length studio album, aptly titled Psy 9th.
The album proved that he hadn’t lost his ear for massive hooks or his knack for high-profile collaborations. The lead single, “That That,” was co-written, produced, and featured Suga of BTS. The track was a massive commercial success, blending PSY’s signature high-energy performance style with Suga’s slick production, proving that the veteran artist could effortlessly bridge generational gaps in the K-pop industry.
The album also featured collaborations with other prominent Korean artists like Sung Si-kyung, Heize, Crush, Tablo, and Jessi, demonstrating that he remains deeply respected within the Korean music scene.
The Legendary “Summer Swag” Concerts
If you want to understand PSY’s current musical identity, you have to look at his live performances. PSY is just as active on stage as ever, most notably through his famous annual concert series, PSY Soak Show (Summer Swag).
These massive stadium tours are cultural phenomena in South Korea, known for thousands of fans dressed in a mandatory dress code of blue, soaked by tons of water cannons, singing along to his extensive catalog of hits for hours. Far from being a retired novelty act, PSY is viewed in his home country as an elite, high-energy live entertainer whose concerts sell out instantly year after year.
The Verdict
PSY may not chase global viral charts with the same relentless frequency he did in the wake of “Gangnam Style,” but he is far from finished. Whether he is dropping collaborative chart-toppers, running a powerhouse music label, or turning stadiums into massive water parks during Summer Swag, PSY is still very much active in the music industry—working entirely on his own terms.
